To fit into the academic workflow, non\u2010linear reading, bookmarking, commenting, extracting text or the integration of non\u2010textual elements must be supported.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>A group of social science students were questioned about their experiences with electronic publications for study purposes. This same group executed several text\u2010related tasks with the digitized material presented to them in two different file formats on four different e\u2010readers. Their performances were subsequently evaluated in detail.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>E\u2010publications have made advances in the academic world; however e\u2010readers do not yet fit seamlessly into the established chain of scholarly text\u2010processing focusing on how readers use material during and after reading. The authors' tests revealed major deficiencies in these techniques.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title><jats:p>The usability test of e\u2010readers in a scientific context aligns with both studies on the prevalence of e\u2010books in the sciences and technical test reports of portable reading devices.
