{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,2]],"date-time":"2025-12-02T15:21:16Z","timestamp":1764688876175,"version":"3.41.2"},"reference-count":15,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"4","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2012,6,8]],"date-time":"2012-06-08T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1339113600000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2012,6,8]]},"abstract":"Purpose<\/jats:title>The purpose of this paper is to review a number of recent initiatives to promote sustainable aquaculture development through improvements to education and training capacity, and innovations in the use of eLearning.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title>The authors share their experience in these initiatives and demonstrate how e\u2010learning has been developed in specific cases to better serve the needs of the aquaculture sector, while addressing the pedagogical issues of distance learning and finding the best use of new internet\u2010based technologies.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Findings<\/jats:title>These examples show how to respond to the needs of adult learners who may have a substantially different learner profile to typical campus students and have a more diverse range of needs and background knowledge. Greater focus is needed on defining, enhancing and accrediting knowledge and skills acquired informally and \u201con the job\u201d, so as to develop more effective formal education interventions.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Practical implications<\/jats:title>Adults engaging with job\u2010related education are not empty vessels requiring to be filled with the correct mix of knowledge and skills by teachers who know all the answers. They are active learners seeking a supportive and enabling structure involving access to appropriate resources, engagement with fellow learners and more expert practitioners, and appropriate challenges and rewards to maximise effort and achievement.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>Originality\/value<\/jats:title>The paper shows that there is substantial social benefit in promoting an innovative and sustainable aquaculture industry that contributes positively to food security and human health.
