Art produced in the first quarter of the twenty-first century has absorbed the late trends of the twentieth century and has traced and reinforced some paths, especially those in connection to economy (art as a valuable market product) and society (art as statement, critical posture and participatory citizenship). The chapter brings together these ideas with examples showing, on one side, the economic connection of art to the market and mass consumption, while other projects, on the other side, include a politicized facet and activism through self and collective curatorship, participatory art and glocalization of its matters of interest, audiences and social impact.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1108\/978-1-80043-896-520211001","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,2,21]],"date-time":"2021-02-21T04:05:30Z","timestamp":1613880330000},"page":"25-46","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["The Purpose of Contemporary Art: Social and Economic Drivers"],"prefix":"10.1108","author":[{"given":"Susana","family":"Gon\u00e7alves","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"140","reference":[{"issue":"2","key":"2025122915245726200_i978-1-80043-896-520211001_13.bib1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"310","DOI":"10.1080\/13530194.2019.1569307","article-title":"Contemporary art on the current refugee crisis: The problematic of aesthetics versus ethics","volume":"46","author":"Arda","year":"2019","journal-title":"British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies"},{"key":"2025122915245726200_i978-1-80043-896-520211001_13.bib2","unstructured":"Bacic, R.
