The project aims to assess the potential of C3DP in addressing the escalating housing demands in Indigenous communities in Canada. Design\/methodology\/approach The research involved a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach, engaging Blackfoot Elders, Knowledge Keepers from the Siksika Nation, Siksika Housing and Nidus3D. Central to this was the design, build and documentation of the Star Lodge project to analyse the advantages and challenges, guided by weekly meetings and site visits. Findings The project harnessed C3DP to streamline construction, enhance durability, reduce maintenance costs and enhance the energy performance of the homes. Notable time savings were achieved compared to conventional construction methods. Challenges included developing strategies to overcome extreme cold weather conditions, achieving a consistent concrete mix and integrating conventional construction elements such as drywall construction in interiors. The project served as a platform for collaboration and community participation, shaping the design and construction process while raising awareness of innovative construction techniques in the community. Originality\/value This study provides an evidence-based framework for the evaluation of C3DP technology by analysing the Star Lodge Project, the first C3DP project in Alberta and the largest of its kind in Canada. By addressing housing challenges in Indigenous communities, the research holds broader implications for sustainable development and Indigenous empowerment across Canada.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1108\/febe-05-2024-0015","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,8,22]],"date-time":"2024-08-22T01:09:06Z","timestamp":1724288946000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.65955\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Examining the role of concrete 3D printing for housing construction on Indigenous Reserves in Canada"],"prefix":"10.65955","volume":"4","author":[{"given":"Mauricio","family":"Soto Rubio","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Muhammad","family":"Mirza","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Mustafa","family":"Kagdi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Ahmad","family":"Bisati","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"55513","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,8,23]]},"reference":[{"issue":"21","key":"key2024101813233312400_ref001","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3390\/su132111978","article-title":"Environmental footprint and economics of a full-scale 3D-printed house","volume":"13","year":"2021","journal-title":"Sustainability"},{"key":"key2024101813233312400_ref035","article-title":"Safety hazards to workers in modular home construction","year":"2003"},{"key":"key2024101813233312400_ref003","volume-title":"Ways of Knowing: an Introduction to Native Studies in Canada","year":"2010"},{"key":"key2024101813233312400_ref004","volume-title":"Housing Conditions of Aboriginal Households Living on-Reserve","author":"Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation","year":"2014"},{"key":"key2024101813233312400_ref005","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"83","DOI":"10.1016\/j.healthplace.2016.05.003","article-title":"Indigenous housing and health in the Canadian north_ revisiting cultural safety | Elsevier enhanced reader","volume":"40","year":"2016","journal-title":"Health and Place"},{"key":"key2024101813233312400_ref006","volume-title":"Housing Supply Report 2022","author":"CMHC","year":"2022"},{"key":"key2024101813233312400_ref040","article-title":"BOD2 specifications | COBOD International","year":"..","journal-title":"COBOD"},{"key":"key2024101813233312400_ref009","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"883","DOI":"10.1016\/j.engstruct.2019.01.061","article-title":"New advancements, challenges and opportunities of multi-storey modular buildings \u2013 a state-of-the-art review","volume":"183","year":"2019","journal-title":"Engineering Structures"},{"key":"key2024101813233312400_ref042","article-title":"FC-36 panel -
