In this sense, this study aims to understand the functioning, dynamics, challenges faced and strategies adopted to improve the services.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>In this study, a qualitative approach was used. Data collection was based on semi-structured interviews with the main managers of four mental health organizations that are part of an inter-organizational cooperation network in the context of mental health in a region in the interior of Portugal. Content analysis was also used for information treatment.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>The results indicate that sharing knowledge between organizations is essential to tackle the complexity of mental illness, promoting a more integrative approach. Cooperation facilitates the optimal use of available resources and improves the response to the needs of individuals with mental illness. However, several obstacles have been identified, including inefficient communication and the existence of administrative barriers deriving from the typology of the different organizations.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Practical implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>To overcome some challenges, organizations have been adopting strategies such as the development of inter-organizational protocols, the implementation of shared information systems and the use of digital platforms to facilitate communication and coordination between organizations in the development of partnerships and interventions in the community.
