A canal surface is the envelope of a moving sphere with varying radius, defined by the trajectory<\/jats:italic>\n          <jats:styled-content>\n              <jats:italic>C<\/jats:italic>(<jats:italic>t<\/jats:italic>)<\/jats:styled-content>\n          <jats:italic>of its center and a radius function<\/jats:italic>\n          <jats:styled-content>\n              <jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic>(<jats:italic>t<\/jats:italic>)<\/jats:styled-content>\n          <jats:italic>. This moving sphere,<\/jats:italic>\n          <jats:styled-content>\n              <jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic>(<jats:italic>t<\/jats:italic>)<\/jats:styled-content>\n          <jats:italic>, touches the canal surface at a characteristic circle<\/jats:italic>\n          <jats:styled-content>\n              <jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic>(<jats:italic>t<\/jats:italic>)<\/jats:styled-content>\n          <jats:italic>. We decompose the canal surface into a set of characteristic circles, compute the silhouette points on each characteristic circle, and then parameterize the silhouette curve.
