{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2024,6,17]],"date-time":"2024-06-17T17:22:37Z","timestamp":1718644957850},"reference-count":40,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"2","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2008,3,12]],"date-time":"2008-03-12T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1205280000000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":11607,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":["onlinelibrary.wiley.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["Br J Haematol"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1976,6]]},"abstract":"<jats:p><jats:bold>S<jats:sc>ummary<\/jats:sc>. <\/jats:bold> The role of surface sulphydryl (\u2010SH) groups of human polymorphonuclear leucocytes on phagocytosis and. phagocytosis\u2010associated oxidative metabolic changes was studied. <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010Chloromercurybenzene sulphonic acid, a surface \u2010SH group inhibitor, had no effect on phagocytosis, superoxide production during phagocytosis, or killing of <jats:italic>S. aureus<\/jats:italic> by the leucocytes, while it inhibited phagocytosis\u2010associated stimulation of hexose monophosphate pathway activity and H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> production. In contrast, N\u2010ethylmaleimide, which inhibits both intracellular and surface \u2010SH groups, inhibited phagocytosis and phagocytosis\u2010associated oxidative metabolic changes. <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010Chloromercurybenzene sulphonic acid also inhibited the stimulation of hexose monophosphate path\u2010way activity by exogenous H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>, suggesting a regulatory role of plasma membrane on the pathway's activity in human polymorphonuclear leucocytes.
