{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,18]],"date-time":"2026-01-18T11:38:15Z","timestamp":1768736295858,"version":"3.49.0"},"reference-count":43,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"6","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2006,5,8]],"date-time":"2006-05-08T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1147046400000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Eur J Clin Investigation"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2006,6]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p><jats:bold>Background\u2002<\/jats:bold> To determine how leptin and ghrelin are expressed in the adipose tissues of obese adults undergoing gastric banding (LAGB), and to correlate tissue expression with serum concentrations and parameters of the metabolic syndrome.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Materials and methods\u2002<\/jats:bold> A cross\u2010sectional analysis of 92\u00a0patients: 61\u00a0obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) 49\u00b72\u00a0\u00b1\u00a01\u00a0kg\u00a0m<jats:sup>\u22122<\/jats:sup> received LAGB, 20\u00a0patients underwent band exchange (BMI, 36\u00b76\u00a0\u00b1\u00a01\u00b74\u00a0kg\u00a0m<jats:sup>\u22122<\/jats:sup>) and 11\u00a0adult patients (BMI, 24\u00b73\u00a0\u00b1\u00a00\u00b76\u00a0kg\u00a0m<jats:sup>\u22122<\/jats:sup>) with fundoplication served as controls. Clinical data such as BMI and blood pressure were evaluated along with subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue gene expression and fasting levels of leptin and ghrelin. Tissue transcripts were measured using real\u2010time PCR, serum protein concentrations radio\u2010immunologically.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Results\u2002<\/jats:bold> Leptin gene expression was highest in the primary LAGB group and more pronounced in subcutaneous fat in both sexes (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>\u00a0&lt;\u00a00\u00b70001). Serum leptin concentrations were highest in the LAGB group (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>\u00a0&lt;\u00a00\u00b7001), whereby women exhibited higher serum levels than men. Leptin concentrations correlated positively to expression in subcutaneous fat (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>\u00a0&lt;\u00a00\u00b70001), and leptin expression was also correlated to BMI and systolic blood pressure. We detected ghrelin gene expression in both types of fat. The ghrelin mRNA amounts in adipose tissues were similar in both sexes and comparable within groups; serum concentrations were lower in patients with primary LAGB than in controls (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>\u00a0&lt;\u00a00\u00b705).<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Conclusions\u2002<\/jats:bold> Human adipose tissue expression of leptin is weight\u2010course dependent and ghrelin is constitutional.
