Dot blots of bacterial DNA were tested with an intragenic digoxigenin\u2010labelled <jats:italic>tet<\/jats:italic>(Q) probe consisting of a 1.45 kb <jats:italic>Eco<\/jats:italic>RI\/<jats:italic>Pvu<\/jats:italic>II fragment from plasmid pNFD13\u20102. Southern blots of chromosomal DNA digested with the restriction enzyme <jats:italic>Eco<\/jats:italic>RI were also examined. The <jats:italic>tet<\/jats:italic>(Q) probe hybridized with DNA from 8 of the 22 tet<jats:sup>r<\/jats:sup> strains, including 2 <jats:italic>Prevotella intermedia<\/jats:italic> strains and one strain each of <jats:italic>Prevotella nigrescens, Prevotella loescheii, Prevotella veroralis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Prevotella melaninogenica.<\/jats:italic> The tet<jats:sup>r<\/jats:sup> strains of <jats:italic>Mitsuokella dentalis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Capnocytophaga ochracea<\/jats:italic> also hybridized with the probe. The lack of discernible plasmid DNA in all the probe\u2010positive isolates suggests that these tetracycline\u2010resistance genes were chromosomally encoded. The probe hybridized with a different size fragment in all the isolates.
