A sequence of analyses indicated \u03b2\u2010D\u2010glucosaminyl\u20101,6\u2010D\u2010glucosamine as the sugar backbone carrying phosphate groups at C\u20101 of the reducing glucosamine and C\u20104 of the non\u2010reducing glucosamine. Both 3\u2010(7\u2010tetradecenoyl)oxytetradecanoic and 3\u2010oxotetradecanoic acid are linked to the NH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> groups. Two residues of 3\u2010hydroxydecanoic acid are linked to hydroxy groups at C\u20103 of both reducing and non\u2010reducing glucosamine, and the hydroxy group of 3\u2010hydroxydecanoic acid is free. In free lipid A, the hydroxy group at C\u20104 of the reducing glucosamine and at C\u20106 of the non\u2010reducing glucosamine are unsubstituted.
