Functional receptors could not be reconstituted from any of these subunits taken singly or in twos and threes. In contrast, large evoked currents (in the \u03bcA range) were consistently observed upon agonist application on oocytes co\u2010injected with ALS or D\u03b12 in combination with the chick \u03b22 structural subunit. The ALS\/\u03b22 and D\u03b12\/\u03b22 receptors are highly sensitive to acetylcholine and nicotine, and their physiological properties resemble those of native or reconstituted receptors from vertebrates. Although the physiological properties of ALS\/\u03b22 and D\u03b12\/\u03b22 receptors are quite similar, clear differences appear in their pharmacological profiles. The ALS\/\u03b22 receptor is highly sensitive to \u03b1\u2010bungarotoxin while the D\u03b12\/\u03b22 receptor is totally insensitive to this agent.
