Black, White, and biracial participants performed a visual search task in which the targets were Black or White faces. Before the task, the biracial participants were primed with either their Black or their White racial identity. All participant groups detected Black faces faster than White faces. Critically, the results also showed a racial-prime effect in biracial individuals: The magnitude of the search asymmetry was significantly different for those primed with their White identity and those primed with their Black identity. These findings suggest that top-down factors such as one's racial identity can influence mechanisms underlying the visual search for faces of different races. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,4,25]],"date-time":"2006-04-25T18:44:51Z","timestamp":1145990691000},"page":"387-392","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":57,"title":["Priming Race in Biracial Observers Affects Visual Search for Black and White Faces"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"17","author":[{"given":"Joan Y.","family":"Chiao","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Harvard University"}]},{"given":"Hannah E.","family":"Heck","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Harvard University"}]},{"given":"Ken","family":"Nakayama","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Harvard University"}]},{"given":"Nalini","family":"Ambady","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Tufts University"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2006,5,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"bibr1-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","first-page":"415","volume-title":"Readings about the social animal","author":"Aronson J.","year":"1998","edition":"8"},{"key":"bibr2-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/1467-9280.00277"},{"key":"bibr3-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","first-page":"357","volume-title":"Handbook of social psychology","author":"Fiske S.T.","year":"1998","edition":"4"},{"key":"bibr4-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/0278-7393.22.6.1364"},{"key":"bibr5-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/0096-3445.129.4.559"},{"key":"bibr6-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1068\/p3315"},{"key":"bibr7-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1207\/S15327043HUP1603_2"},{"key":"bibr8-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/0022-3514.83.3.638"},{"key":"bibr9-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/1467-9280.00111"},{"key":"bibr10-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","author":"Shih M.","journal-title":"Psychological Bulletin"},{"key":"bibr11-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1006\/jesp.1998.1373"},{"key":"bibr12-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/0022-3514.69.5.797"},{"key":"bibr13-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0022-1031(03)00019-2"},{"key":"bibr14-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.4135\/9781483327433.n12"},{"key":"bibr15-j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","first-page":"13","volume-title":"Attention","author":"Wolfe J.M.","year":"1998"}],"container-title":["Psychological Science"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full-xml\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","content-type":"application\/xml","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,11]],"date-time":"2025-03-11T10:01:05Z","timestamp":1741687265000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2006,5]]},"references-count":15,"journal-issue":{"issue":"5","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2006,5]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/j.1467-9280.2006.01717.x","relation":{},"ISSN":["0956-7976","1467-9280"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0956-7976","type":"print"},{"value":"1467-9280","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2006,5]]}}}
