Despite the success of these approaches there has been little detailed replacement of previous social models with an understanding of how Iron Age societies worked. Looking at the later Iron Age of western Britain this paper combines examination of the exchange of material culture alongside study of the landscape to explore the nature of Iron Age communities. It is argued that Iron Age societies in the region used material culture to construct and maintain social relationships, while using visual landscape references allowed groups to engage in larger perceived communities.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1468-0092.2007.00274.x","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,1,26]],"date-time":"2007-01-26T17:01:52Z","timestamp":1169830912000},"page":"79-102","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":15,"title":["PERCEIVING COMMUNITIES: EXCHANGE, LANDSCAPES AND SOCIAL NETWORKS IN THE LATER IRON AGE OF WESTERN BRITAIN"],"prefix":"10.1111","volume":"26","author":[{"given":"TOM","family":"MOORE","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2007,1,26]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_11_2_1","volume-title":"The Prehistoric landscape and Iron Age enclosed settlement at Mingies Ditch, Hardwick, Oxon","author":"Allen T.","year":"1993"},{"key":"e_1_2_11_3_1","author":"Arnold D.","year":"1985","journal-title":"Ceramic Theory and Cultural Process"},{"key":"e_1_2_11_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.2307\/j.ctv1h7zms9","author":"Basso K.","year":"1990","journal-title":"Western Apache language and culture"},{"key":"e_1_2_11_5_1","author":"Basso K.","year":"1999","journal-title":"Wisdom sits in places.
