Enzymatically releasable sialic acid was from the glycoprotein but not the ganglioside fraction of the cell. Addition of ethanol to the medium did not affect the enzymatic hydrolysis of sialyllactose nor did ethanol, over a concentration range of 0\u2013200 mM, alter the enzymatic release of sialic acid from intact NN cells. The total cellular sialic acid content was independent of length of cell exposure to ethanol but varied with the age of the cells.
