Three compounds were isolated from the basic aliphatic amino acid fraction of bovine brain with several ion\u2010exchange chromatographies. They showed the same R<jats:sub>f<\/jats:sub> values in paper and thin\u2010layer chromatographies as those of authentic N<jats:sup>G<\/jats:sup>\u2010monomethylarginine, N<jats:sup>G<\/jats:sup>\u2010dimethylargi\u2010nine, and N<jats:sup>G<\/jats:sup>\u2010dimethylarginine. The migration distance of the isolated compounds in high\u2010voltage paper electropho\u2010resis and the retention times in ion\u2010exchange HPLC were also identical to those of the above authentic methylarginines. We concluded that these three compounds are the methyl derivatives of arginine described above. The amount of these three compounds isolated from 1,090 g of bovine brain was 0.3 \u03bcmol of N<jats:sup>G<\/jats:sup>\u2010monomethylarginine, 0.1 \u03bcmol of N<jats:sup>G<\/jats:sup>,N<jats:sup>G<\/jats:sup>\u2010dimethylarginine, and 0.5 \u03bcmol of N<jats:sup>G<\/jats:sup>,N<jats:sup>G<\/jats:sup>\u2010dimethylarginine.
