{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,15]],"date-time":"2026-01-15T03:47:12Z","timestamp":1768448832005,"version":"3.49.0"},"reference-count":27,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"9","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2009,6,1]],"date-time":"2009-06-01T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1243814400000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":["onlinelibrary.wiley.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["Acta Paediatrica"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2009,9]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>Maternal intake of omega\u2010<jats:italic>3<\/jats:italic> (\u03c9\u20103) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) during pregnancy has decreased, possibly contributing to a current increased risk of childhood allergy.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Aim:\u2002<\/jats:bold> To describe the effects of maternal \u03c9\u20103 long\u2010chain PUFA supplementation during pregnancy and lactation on the incidence of allergic disease in infancy.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Methods:\u2002<\/jats:bold> One hundred and forty\u2010five pregnant women, affected by allergy themselves or having a husband or previous child with allergies, were included in a randomized placebo\u2010controlled trial. Daily maternal supplementation with either 1.6 g eicosapentaenoic acid and 1.1 g docosahexaenoic acid or placebo was given from the 25<jats:sup>th<\/jats:sup> gestational week to average 3\u20134 months of breastfeeding. Skin prick tests, detection of circulating specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies and clinical examinations of the infants were performed.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Results:\u2002<\/jats:bold> The period prevalence of food allergy was lower in the \u03c9\u20103 group (1\/52, 2%) compared to the placebo group (10\/65, 15%, p &lt; 0.05) as well as the incidence of IgE\u2010associated eczema (\u03c9\u20103 group: 4\/52, 8%; placebo group: 15\/63, 24%, p &lt; 0.05).<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Conclusion:\u2002<\/jats:bold> Maternal \u03c9\u20103 fatty acid supplementation may decrease the risk of food allergy and IgE\u2010associated eczema during the first year of life in infants with a family history of allergic
