We suggest this crisis could be productively conceptualized as a crisis in perspective\u2010taking\u2014the tendency and competency to actively consider others' mental and emotional states.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Objectives<\/jats:title><jats:p>This conceptual paper sets out to propose a theoretical framework that identifies the key affordances of digital platforms for promoting perspective\u2010taking in formal educational settings (K\u201012 and higher education): (1) <jats:italic>connecting<\/jats:italic> diverse individuals, (2) <jats:italic>simulating<\/jats:italic> interactions with other perspectives and (3) supporting the <jats:italic>articulation<\/jats:italic> and sharing of perspectives.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods<\/jats:title><jats:p>Rather than summarizing the state of existing research, this paper aims to offer a novel conceptualization that allows unpacking the interplay between research on perspective\u2010taking and work on the affordances and constraints of digital media. We identify the three key affordances outlined above, exemplifying them by focusing on one type of digital tool and comparing them along two axes: (i) the <jats:italic>depth<\/jats:italic> vs. <jats:italic>diversity<\/jats:italic> of interactions it supports and (ii) its cultivation of <jats:italic>intergroup<\/jats:italic> perspective\u2010taking vs. <jats:italic>interpersonal<\/jats:italic> perspective\u2010taking.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results and Conclusions<\/jats:title><jats:p>This framework, we argue, articulates the advantages and limitations of digital tools towards engagement in perspective\u2010taking, while providing a conceptual roadmap, and practical considerations, for researchers and practitioners interested in cultivating digitally mediated perspective\u2010taking in educational settings.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>","DOI":"10.1111\/jcal.13086","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,10,26]],"date-time":"2024-10-26T08:04:12Z","timestamp":1729929852000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Can we work it out?
