This study was designed to determine whether seed germination of three halophytic grasses (<jats:italic><jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">P<\/jats:styled-content>hragmites karka, <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">D<\/jats:styled-content>ichanthium annulatum<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic><jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">E<\/jats:styled-content>ragrostis ciliaris<\/jats:italic>) could be improved by exogenous application of ascorbic acid (<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>s<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>) under saline conditions. Seeds of <jats:italic><jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">P<\/jats:styled-content>.\u00a0karka<\/jats:italic> were germinated in varying concentrations of <jats:roman>NaCl<\/jats:roman> and <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>s<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content> under different temperature regimes, and seeds of <jats:italic><jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">D<\/jats:styled-content>ichanthium annulatum and <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">E<\/jats:styled-content>ragrostis ciliaris<\/jats:italic> were germinated at optimal temperatures only. In <jats:italic><jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">P<\/jats:styled-content>.\u00a0karka,<\/jats:italic> concentrations of <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>s<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content> (5 and 10\u00a0mM) alleviated the salinity effects better at cooler and moderate thermo\u2010periods, whereas higher concentrations (20\u00a0mM of <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>s<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>) failed to improve germination under all temperature regimes. <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>s<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content> was ineffective at a warmer thermo\u2010period (25\/35\u00b0C). The rate of germination also increased at all thermo\u2010periods with the application of <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>s<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content> except at 25\/35\u00b0C under saline conditions. Application of <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content>s<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">A<\/jats:styled-content> improved the germination of <jats:italic><jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">E<\/jats:styled-content>.\u00a0ciliaris<\/jats:italic> seeds under saline conditions but was inhibitory for <jats:italic><jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">D<\/jats:styled-content>.\u00a0annulatum<\/jats:italic> in comparison with the untreated control. The rate of germination followed the similar pattern as that of seed germination.
