The availability of the complete chromosomal sequence allowed the categorization of 61 open reading frames likely to be involved in metal tolerance or homeostasis, plus seven more possibly involved in metal resistance mechanisms. Some systems appeared to be duplicated. These might perform redundant functions or be involved in tolerance to different metals. In total,\n                    <jats:italic>P. putida<\/jats:italic>\n                    was found to bear two systems for arsenic (\n                    <jats:italic>arsRBCH<\/jats:italic>\n                    ), one for chromate (\n                    <jats:italic>chrA<\/jats:italic>\n                    ), four to six systems for divalent cations (two\n                    <jats:italic>cadA<\/jats:italic>\n                    and two to four\n                    <jats:italic>czc<\/jats:italic>\n                    chemiosmotic antiporters), two systems for monovalent cations:\n                    <jats:italic>pacS<\/jats:italic>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:italic>cusCBA<\/jats:italic>\n                    (plus one cryptic\n                    <jats:italic>silP<\/jats:italic>\n                    gene containing a frameshift mutation), two operons for Cu chelation (\n                    <jats:italic>copAB<\/jats:italic>\n                    ), one metallothionein for metal(loid) binding, one system for Te\/Se methylation (\n                    <jats:italic>tpmT<\/jats:italic>\n                    ) and four ABC transporters for the uptake of essential Zn, Mn, Mo and Ni (one\n                    <jats:italic>nikABCDE<\/jats:italic>\n                    , two\n                    <jats:italic>znuACB<\/jats:italic>\n                    and one\n                    <jats:italic>mobABC<\/jats:italic>\n                    ). Some of the metal\u2010related clusters are located in gene islands with atypical genome signatures. The predicted capacity of\n                    <jats:italic>P. putida<\/jats:italic>\n                    to endure exposure to heavy metals is discussed from an evolutionary perspective.\n
