The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">AMR <\/jats:styled-content><jats:italic>Escherichia coli<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>E.\u00a0coli<\/jats:italic>) in wild birds and mammalian species. Thirty faecal samples were collected from each of the following wildlife species: herring gulls (<jats:italic>Larus argentatus<\/jats:italic>), black\u2010headed gulls (<jats:italic>Larus ridibundus<\/jats:italic>), lesser black\u2010back gulls (<jats:italic>Larus fuscus<\/jats:italic>), hybrid deer species (<jats:italic>Cervus elaphus x Cervus nippon<\/jats:italic>) and twenty\u2010six from starlings (<jats:italic>Sturnus vulgaris<\/jats:italic>). A total of 115 <jats:italic>E.\u00a0coli<\/jats:italic> isolates were isolated from 81 of 146 samples. Confirmed <jats:italic>E.\u00a0coli<\/jats:italic> isolates were tested for their susceptibility to seven antimicrobial agents by disc diffusion. In total, 5.4% (8\/146) of samples exhibited multidrug\u2010resistant phenotypes. The phylogenetic group and <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">AMR<\/jats:styled-content>\u2010encoding genes of all multidrug resistance isolates were determined by <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">PCR<\/jats:styled-content>. Tetracycline\u2010, ampicillin\u2010 and streptomycin\u2010resistant isolates were the most common resistant phenotypes. The following genes were identified in <jats:italic>E.\u00a0coli<\/jats:italic>:<jats:italic> bla<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\"><jats:sub>TEM<\/jats:sub><\/jats:styled-content><jats:sub>,<\/jats:sub> <jats:italic>str<\/jats:italic>A, <jats:italic>tet<\/jats:italic>(A) and <jats:italic>tet<\/jats:italic>(B). Plasmids were identified in all samples that exhibited multidrug\u2010resistant phenotypes.
