We determined the protein sequence of human brain \u03b1 parvalbumin by mass spectrometry and cloned human \u03b2 parvalbumin (or oncomodulin) from genomic DNA and preterm placental cDNA. \u03b2 parvalbumin differs in 54 positions from \u03b1 parvalbumin and lacks the C\u2010terminal amino acid 109. From MS analyses of \u03b1 and \u03b2 parvalbumins we conclude that parvalbumins generally lack posttranslational modifications.<\/jats:p><jats:p>\u03b1 and \u03b2 parvalbumins were differently expressed in human tissues when analyzed by immunoblotting and polymerase\u2010chain\u2010reaction techniques. Whereas \u03b1 parvalbumin was found in a number of adult human tissues, \u03b2 parvalbumin was restricted to preterm placenta. The pattern of \u03b1 parvalbumin expression also differs in man compared to other vertebrates. For example, in rat, \u03b1 parvalbumin was found in extrafusal and intrafusal skeletal\u2010muscle fibres whereas, in man, \u03b1 parvalbumin was restricted to the muscle spindles.
