{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,17]],"date-time":"2025-10-17T13:22:53Z","timestamp":1760707373657},"reference-count":24,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"3","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2004,9,22]],"date-time":"2004-09-22T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1095811200000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":2152,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["The Journal of Physiology"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1998,11]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n<jats:list list-type=\"explicit-label\">\n<jats:list-item><jats:p>To characterize membrane properties that might be relevant to the function and fate of Cajal\u2010Retzius (CR) cells, the pharmacological and physiological effects of GABA acting at GABA<jats:sub>A<\/jats:sub> receptors were studied in CR cells from embryonic (E18) and postnatal (P11\u201313) slices of rat neocortex.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item>\n<jats:list-item><jats:p>From the embryonic to the postnatal stage, GABA\u2010induced maximum current almost tripled, the EC<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub> increased from 38 to 74 \u03bc<jats:sc>m<\/jats:sc>, and the Hill number increased from 1.4 to 1.9. Muscimol\u2010elicited currents were qualitatively and quantitatively similar to those produced by GABA.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item>\n<jats:list-item><jats:p>GABA\u2010induced changes in the amplitude of large\u2010conductance Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>\u2010activated K<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> channel current recorded on\u2010cell from E18 CR cells were consistent with depolarization.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item>\n<jats:list-item><jats:p>GABA\u2010mediated depolarization of embryonic and postnatal CR cells was studied directly with perforated\u2010patch recording techniques. Ten micromolar and 1 m<jats:sc>m<\/jats:sc> GABA, respectively, depolarized E18 CR cells to \u221227 \u00b1 1 and \u221225 \u00b1 3 mV. These same concentrations of GABA depolarized P11 CR cells to \u221236 \u00b1 3 and \u221223 \u00b1 3 mV.<\/jats:p><\/jats:list-item>\n<jats:list-item><jats:p>In postnatal cortex, GABA (100 \u03bc<jats:sc>m<\/jats:sc>) increased the firing rate of CR cells 7.3\u2010fold.
