This condition occurred in six children (3\u00b76 per cent), all of whom were born during the 1961\u201064 period, an incidence in those years of 10\u00b73 per cent, compared with 0\u00b70 per cent in the period 1965\u201070 (\u03c7<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>=8\u00b772, p=0\u00b70032). These findings are considered in the context of perinatal illness and care. La seule diff\u00e9rence statistiquement significative trouv\u00e9e entre les enfants avec et sans dipl\u00e9gie spastique concernait une temp\u00e9rature rectale moyenne un peu plus basse au premier jour de la vie seulement.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>ZUSAMMENFASSUNG<\/jats:title><jats:p>Von 170 Kindern, die 1500g oder weniger wogen bei der Geburt und die im Hammersmith Hospital, London geboren waren bzw. kurz nach der Geburt dorthin verlegt wurden in der Zeit von 1961\u201070 einschlie\u00dflich, wurden 165 nachuntersucht, um das auftreten neurologischer Behinderungen zu beurteilen unter besonderer Ber\u00fccksichtigung der spastischen Diplegie. Diese fanden sich bei sechs Kindern (3,6 Prozent), die alle zwischen 1961\u201064 einschlie\u00dflich geboren waren und eine H\u00e4ufigkeit des Auftretens von 10,3 Prozent in diesen Jahren repr\u00e4sentieren im Vergleich zu 0,0 Prozent von 1965\u201070 einsclie\u00dflich (\u03ba<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup> 8\u00b772, p=0\u00b7002). Diese Befunde werden im Zusammenhang mit perinatalen Erkrankungen und Pflege betrachtet. Der einzige statistisch signifikante Unterschied zwischen den Kindern mit und ohne spastische Diplegie war eine etwas niedrigere mittlere Rektaltemperatur nur am ersten Lebenstag.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>RESUMEN<\/jats:title><jats:p>Muy bajo peso al nacer y defecto neurol\u00f3gico subsiguiente (con especial referenda a la diplegia esp\u00e1stica)<\/jats:p><jats:p>De 170 ni\u00f1os que pesaban 1500g o menos al nacer y que habian nacido en el Hospital Hammersmith, o habian ingresado en \u00e9l poco despu\u00e9s de nacer, durante el per\u00edodo de 1961 a 1970 inclusive, fueron seguidos 165 para conocer la incidencia de minusvalia neurol\u00f3gica, con referencia particular a la diplegia esp\u00e1stica. Esta alteraci\u00f3n ocurri\u00f3 en seis ni\u00f1os (3,6 por ciento), todos los cuales habian nacido en el perido 1961\u201064 inclusive, representando una incidencia en estos a\u00f1os de 10,3 por ciento, en comparaci\u00f3n con el 0 por ciento en el perido 1965\u201070 (\u03c7<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>=8,72; p=0,0032).
