The aim of our study was to assess the role of common passerine bird species as reservoirs for\n                    <jats:italic>B.\u2003burgdorferi<\/jats:italic>\n                    s.l. in Western Europe. We surveyed birds in enzootic areas in Portugal, where no information is available for birds as reservoirs for this aetiologic agent and where\n                    <jats:italic>B.\u2003lusitaniae<\/jats:italic>\n                    , for which few reservoirs have been identified, is the dominant genospecies. Twenty\u2010three birds (2.9%), including\n                    <jats:italic>Turdus merula<\/jats:italic>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:italic>T.\u2003philomelos<\/jats:italic>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:italic>Parus major<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>Fringilla coelebs<\/jats:italic>\n                    harboured infected ticks, but only\n                    <jats:italic>Turdus<\/jats:italic>\n                    sp. harboured infected tick larvae. In one study area, although\n                    <jats:italic>B.\u2003lusitaniae<\/jats:italic>\n                    was dominant in questing\n                    <jats:italic>Ixodes ricinus<\/jats:italic>\n                    , no ticks feeding on birds were infected with this genospecies, and\n                    <jats:italic>B.\u2003valaisiana<\/jats:italic>\n                    was the dominant genospecies in\n                    <jats:italic>I.\u2003ricinus<\/jats:italic>\n                    larvae feeding on birds. In the other area ticks collected from birds were mainly\n                    <jats:italic>I.\u2003frontalis<\/jats:italic>\n                    which were infected with\n                    <jats:italic>B.\u2003turdi<\/jats:italic>\n                    . Two skin biopsies (4.2%) from two\n                    <jats:italic>T.\u2003merula<\/jats:italic>\n                    were positive, one for\n                    <jats:italic>B.\u2003valaisiana<\/jats:italic>\n                    and the other for\n                    <jats:italic>B.\u2003turdi<\/jats:italic>\n                    .
