{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,11,9]],"date-time":"2025-11-09T03:31:17Z","timestamp":1762659077763},"reference-count":20,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"4","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2011,3,4]],"date-time":"2011-03-04T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1299196800000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Acad Dermatol Venereol"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2011,4]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p><jats:bold>Background\u2002<\/jats:bold> Dermatological diseases in psychiatric patients are common; however, epidemiological data on this subject are scarce and to our knowledge integral studies of dermatological disease in psychiatric inpatients are not available yet.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Aim\u2002<\/jats:bold> The aim of this study was to describe the incidence of dermatological problems in psychiatric inpatients.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Method\u2002<\/jats:bold> This study evaluates the consultations for new dermatological problems by inpatients of a general psychiatric hospital of over 700 beds during a 6\u2010month period.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Results\u2002<\/jats:bold> A total of 255 patients consulted their physician because of a new dermatological problem. Diagnoses (<jats:italic>n\u2003<\/jats:italic>=\u2003360) included skin infections (32%), accidents (7%), decubitus ulcers (7%), complications of medical treatment (3%), auto mutilation (1%) and neoplasms of the skin (1%). Patients with skin infections were likely to have diabetes [odds ratio (OR)\u2003=\u20033.6; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.56\u20138.40]. Patients with decubitus ulcers were likely to have an addiction problem (OR\u2003=\u20036.4; 95% CI: 1.46\u201328.00). Dermatitis was associated with affective disorder (OR\u2003=\u20032.5; 95% CI: 1.12\u20135.43) but not with psychosis (OR\u2003=\u20030.5; 95% CI: 0.23\u20130.90). Only a poor correlation existed between the length of hospital stay and skin problems.<\/jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Conclusions\u2002<\/jats:bold> Dermatological problems are common in hospitalized psychiatric patients. Patients with diabetes mellitus are at high risk for skin infections. There are significant relationships between the psychiatric and the dermatological diagnoses.
