Two major clades can be distinguished: clade 1 comprises\n                    <jats:italic>S. semidentata, S. melidensis, S. impressa, S. orocarpetana<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>S.<\/jats:italic>\n                    \u00d7\n                    <jats:italic>oblongifolia<\/jats:italic>\n                    ; clade 2 comprises\n                    <jats:italic>S. ageratifolia, S. canescens<\/jats:italic>\n                    and the subspecies\n                    <jats:italic>arrabidensis, rosmarinifolia, castellana, pectinata<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>montiberica<\/jats:italic>\n                    . No qualitative characteristics or groups of characteristics clearly differentiate these clades. Monophyly of the\n                    <jats:italic>S. rosmarinifolia<\/jats:italic>\n                    aggregate is supported. Most populations appear highly polyphyletic.\n                    <jats:italic>Santolina impressa, S. melidensis, S. ageratifolia<\/jats:italic>\n                    and the\n                    <jats:italic>S. rosmarinifolia<\/jats:italic>\n                    subspecies\n                    <jats:italic>rosmarinifolia<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>arrabidensis<\/jats:italic>\n                    form a monophyletic group whereas\n                    <jats:italic>Santolina orocarpetana<\/jats:italic>\n                    is polyphyletic and\n                    <jats:italic>Santolina oblongifolia, S. canescens, S. semidentata<\/jats:italic>\n                    and the subspecies\n                    <jats:italic>castellana, pectinata<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>montiberica<\/jats:italic>\n                    are all paraphyletic. The internal branches have an average length of 20.1 steps, with a standard deviation of 8.5 steps. The basal branch of several taxa shows a much higher number than average (20.1 steps) over the tree, which suggests that reasonably good clade support is present for these taxa.\n                    <jats:italic>Santolina semidentata<\/jats:italic>\n                    is the most variable taxon of this aggregate. The presence of a capitulum with three rows of involucral bracts is the ancestral condition in the aggregate. The results suggest that this aggregate arose from an ancient polyploid.
