Here, we used a transdisciplinary approach to understand the ecological drivers of the distribution of this introgressed mt<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DNA<\/jats:styled-content> in the Iberian hare species.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Location<\/jats:title><jats:p>Europe, with an emphasis on the Iberian Peninsula.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods<\/jats:title><jats:p>First, we modelled the climatic niche of <jats:italic>L. timidus<\/jats:italic> to predict the favourability for the species during the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">LGM<\/jats:styled-content>. Second, we gathered data regarding <jats:italic>L. timidus<\/jats:italic> mt<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DNA<\/jats:styled-content> introgression for 1137 individuals (139 populations) from the Iberian Peninsula. We tested whether the climatic favourability for <jats:italic>L. timidus<\/jats:italic> during the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">LGM<\/jats:styled-content> reflects the frequency of the introgressed mt<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DNA<\/jats:styled-content> in the carrier hare populations.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results<\/jats:title><jats:p>The climatic favourability for the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">LGM<\/jats:styled-content> is positively related to the presence of individuals with <jats:italic>L. timidus<\/jats:italic> mt<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DNA<\/jats:styled-content>, and discriminates better than by chance between individuals with and without this lineage. At the population level, the favourability values relate to the observed frequencies of mt<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DNA<\/jats:styled-content> introgression and discriminate between populations with and without <jats:italic>L. timidus<\/jats:italic> mt<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DNA<\/jats:styled-content>.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Main conclusions<\/jats:title><jats:p>The results suggest that the geographical distribution of <jats:italic>L. timidus<\/jats:italic> mt<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DNA<\/jats:styled-content> introgression is linked to <jats:italic>L. timidus<\/jats:italic> distribution in Iberia during the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">LGM<\/jats:styled-content>.
