{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,11,11]],"date-time":"2025-11-11T12:05:37Z","timestamp":1762862737465},"reference-count":15,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"2","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2013,10,23]],"date-time":"2013-10-23T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1382486400000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":["onlinelibrary.wiley.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["Journal of Anatomy"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2014,2]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>The sciatic nerve (<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content>) is easily blocked under ultrasound guidance by identifying either the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> common trunk or its two components: the tibial nerve (<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">TN<\/jats:styled-content>) and the common peroneal nerve (<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">CPN<\/jats:styled-content>).\u00a0The authors investigate whether there are anatomical differences between newborns and adults. The <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content>,<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\"> TN<\/jats:styled-content> and <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">CPN<\/jats:styled-content> of both lower extremities in 24 (11 neonatal and 13 adults) formolized cadavers were dissected.\u00a0Distances were measured from the origin of the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> (passing under the piriformis muscle) to its division into <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">TN<\/jats:styled-content> and <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">CPN<\/jats:styled-content>, and from there to the popliteal crease. The sciatic\/thigh coefficient (proportion relating <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> length to thigh length) and the variation coefficient for the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> were calculated. The distance from the popliteal crease to the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> division was significantly shorter in neonates than in adults (1.04\u00a0\u00b1\u00a00.9\u00a0cm vs. 5.6\u00a0\u00b1\u00a05.1\u00a0cm, <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>\u00a0=\u00a00.0003). In addition, the neonatal <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> divided at a proportionally more distal position in the thigh than it did in adults (86\u00a0\u00b1\u00a013 vs. 74\u00a0\u00b1\u00a015%, <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>\u00a0=\u00a00.0059).\u00a0However, the coefficient of variation between the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content>\u2010division distances was not statistically different in infants and adults (12.8 vs. 18.2%, <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>\u00a0=\u00a00.4345). The variations in the point of <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> division seen in the adult <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> are already seen in the neonatal period, but in newborns the <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> divided in a more distal position in relation to the thigh than in adults, so this finding of anatomical variability in neonates suggests that ultrasound guidance can be useful when performing a <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">SN<\/jats:styled-content> block in these small
