It is known that the\n                    <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">PWN<\/jats:styled-content>\n                    is capable of infecting other conifers; however, there is currently no information on which other plant species may be susceptible to\n                    <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">PWD<\/jats:styled-content>\n                    . In this study, the potential susceptibility of two common species of European forests,\n                    <jats:italic>Picea abies<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>Cupressus lusitanica,<\/jats:italic>\n                    to\n                    <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">PWN<\/jats:styled-content>\n                    was assessed through the monitoring of visual external symptoms, dimension and localization of the nematode population in stems, quantification of total chlorophyll, total soluble phenolics and lignin, at 7, 14, 21 and 28\u00a0days after inoculation. The degree of susceptibility was established through the comparison of symptoms with\n                    <jats:italic>Pinus pinaster<\/jats:italic>\n                    , a well\u2010known\n                    <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">PWN<\/jats:styled-content>\n                    host. Furthermore, the stem ultrastructure of\n                    <jats:italic>P.\u00a0abies<\/jats:italic>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:italic>C.\u00a0lusitanica<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>Pn.\u00a0pinaster<\/jats:italic>\n                    was analysed by scanning electron microscopy. The results suggest that\n                    <jats:italic>P.\u00a0abies<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>C.\u00a0lusitanica<\/jats:italic>\n                    are resistant to\n                    <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">PWN<\/jats:styled-content>\n                    , and that lignin biosynthesis in these species is affected at an early stage of the infestation.
