Similar measurements were made on other rats with experimentally induced h\u00e6molytic or h\u00e6morrhagic an\u00e6mia. A marked increase in TIBC followed both types of operation and also occurred in both forms of an\u00e6mia. Whereas the change in TIBC after operation was associated with marked generalized alterations in the serum protein pattern little change in this pattern was found in an\u00e6mia. It is considered likely that the increase in TIBC following the operation represents an alteration in the concentration of the plasma iron binding protein, transferrin, as part of a general change in protein metabolism, while the increase in TIBC in the an\u00e6mias is more likely to be a change specific for transferrin and acting as part of the alteration in iron metabolism which occurs in an\u00e6mia.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1113\/expphysiol.1962.sp001576","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2014,12,16]],"date-time":"2014-12-16T21:37:04Z","timestamp":1418765824000},"page":"66-73","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["SERUM PROTEIN CHANGES AND PLASMA TOTAL IRON BINDING CAPACITY AFTER LAPAROTOMY OR PARTIAL HEPATECTOMY AND IN AN\u00c6MIA IN THE ALBINO RAT"],"prefix":"10.1113","volume":"47","author":[{"given":"E.
