The muscarinic depolarizing action of ACh on cortical neurones is associated with an increase in membrane resistance (mean \u0394<jats:italic>V<\/jats:italic>\/\u0394<jats:italic>R<\/jats:italic> = 3\u00b716 mV\/M\u03a9).<\/jats:p><jats:p>2. ACh also promotes repetitive firing by slowing repolarization after spikes.<\/jats:p><jats:p>3. The depolarizing effect has a mean reversal level of \u221286\u00b77 mV (with mean resting potential \u221256 mV).<\/jats:p><jats:p>4. It is concluded that as a muscarinic excitatory agent, ACh probably acts by reducing the resting K<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> conductance of cortical neurones, and also the delayed K<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> current of the action potential.<\/jats:p><jats:p>5.
