Compared to garments or facial accessories, fewer studies have focused on virtual footwear try-on, regardless of user study or technical development. Thus, it is necessary to examine the effectiveness of existing VTO applications on the user's affective responses. In this study, we compared the user experience of three different footwear try-on methods (real, VR, and AR) with both physiological and psychological measures. Subjects conducted a try-on experiment on different pairs of sneakers. Each subject\u2019s gaze trajectory was recorded using an eye tracker and analyzed to show his\/her visual attention in each method. Afterward, the subjects completed questionnaires to assess the sense of presence, usability, and the user experience score for the try-on processes, and subsequently attended a think-aloud procedure to express their thoughts. The analysis results of the collected data showed that the user experience produced by the VR and AR try-on is not comparable to that of the real environment. The results also revealed factors that negatively affect the quality of the user's interaction with the processes. These findings may provide insights into further improvements in VTO technology.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1115\/1.4053328","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,12,21]],"date-time":"2021-12-21T10:07:11Z","timestamp":1640081231000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1115\/crossmarkpolicy-asme","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":20,"title":["A Comparative Study of Virtual Footwear Try-On Applications in Virtual and Augmented Reality"],"prefix":"10.1115","volume":"22","author":[{"given":"Chih-Hsing","family":"Chu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"National Tsig Hua University, Hsinchu 30013, Taiwan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yi-An","family":"Chen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Tsig Hua University, Hsinchu 30013, Taiwan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Ying-Yin","family":"Huang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Taipei University of Technology, Taipei 10608, Taiwan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yun-Ju","family":"Lee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National Tsig Hua University, Hsinchu 30013, Taiwan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"33","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,2,7]]},"reference":[{"issue":"2","key":"2022020714353727700_CIT0001","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"45","DOI":"10.1002\/dir.20113","article-title":"Adoption of Virtual Try-On Technology for Online Apparel Shopping","volume":"22","author":"Kim","year":"2008","journal-title":"J.
