CREWS addresses, in an integrated way, all phases of the planning and management process. This paper reports some results of work in the application of both Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research techniques in planning and managing crew-members (engineers and conductors) in railroad companies. The paper also presents case studies emerging from the application of CREWS both to railroad and to subway companies. The main goal of the development of CREWS was to increase the efficiency of railroad companies through optimized use of human resources. This goal has largely been achieved, but many other benefits, that were not fully apparent when the project started, have surfaced along the years. This paper also addresses some of these issues.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1115\/jrc2010-36235","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2010,11,17]],"date-time":"2010-11-17T18:14:35Z","timestamp":1290017675000},"page":"535-544","update-policy":"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1115\/crossmarkpolicy-asme","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Case Studies in Planning Railroad Crew Members"],"prefix":"10.1115","author":[{"given":"Joa\u02dco P.","family":"Martins","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Sistemas Cognitivos S.A., Lisboa, Portugal"}]},{"given":"Ernesto M.","family":"Morgado","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Sistemas Cognitivos S.A., Lisboa, Portugal"}]}],"member":"33","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2010,10,28]]},"event":{"name":"2010 Joint Rail Conference","start":{"date-parts":[[2010,4,27]]},"sponsor":["Rail Transportation Division"],"location":"Urbana, Illinois, USA","end":{"date-parts":[[2010,4,29]]},"acronym":"JRC2010"},"container-title":["2010 Joint Rail Conference, Volume 2"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"http:\/\/asmedigitalcollection.asme.org\/JRC\/proceedings-pdf\/doi\/10.1115\/JRC2010-36235\/2712334\/535_1.pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,9,4]],"date-time":"2019-09-04T14:07:55Z","timestamp":1567606075000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/asmedigitalcollection.asme.org\/JRC\/proceedings\/JRC2010\/49071\/535\/337588"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2010,1,1]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1115\/jrc2010-36235","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2010,1,1]]}}}
