It discusses the Annual Maxima method and the Peak Over Threshold method, using unified terminology and notation. Furthermore, it describes a method based on the r largest order statistics that has the advantage of providing more accurate parameters and quantile estimates than the Annual Maxima method. Several examples illustrate the methodology and reveal strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1115\/omae2003-37478","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2009,1,9]],"date-time":"2009-01-09T18:22:23Z","timestamp":1231525343000},"page":"491-498","update-policy":"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1115\/crossmarkpolicy-asme","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Predictions of Extreme Values of Significant Wave Height"],"prefix":"10.1115","author":[{"given":"C.","family":"Guedes Soares","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Technical University of Lisbon, Lisboa, Portugal"}]},{"given":"R.
