{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,2,13]],"date-time":"2026-02-13T09:30:04Z","timestamp":1770975004790,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":0,"publisher":"Human Kinetics","issue":"6","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2017,7]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec sec-type=\"purpose\"><jats:title>Purpose:<\/jats:title><jats:p>To analyze the effects of swimming pace on the relative contribution of leg kick to swimming speed and to compare arm-stroke efficiency (\u03b7<jats:italic>F<\/jats:italic>) assessed when swimming with the arms only (SAO) and while swimming front crawl (FCS) using individual and fixed adjustments to arm-stroke and leg-kick contribution to forward speed.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec sec-type=\"methods\"><jats:title>Methods:<\/jats:title><jats:p>Twenty-nine master swimmers (21 men, 8 women) performed SAO and FCS at 6 self-selected speeds from very slow to maximal. The average swimming speed (<jats:italic>v<\/jats:italic>), stroke frequency (SF), and stroke length (SL) were assessed in the central 10 m of the swimming pool. Then, a 2nd-order polynomial regression was used to obtain values of <jats:italic>v<\/jats:italic> at paired SF. The percentage difference in <jats:italic>v<\/jats:italic> between FCS and SAO, for each paired SF, was used to calculate the relative contributions of the arm stroke (AC) and leg kick (LC) to FCS. Then \u03b7F was calculated using the indirect \u201cpaddle-wheel\u201d approach in 3 different ways: using general, individual, and no adjustments to AC.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec sec-type=\"results\"><jats:title>Results:<\/jats:title><jats:p>The LC increased with SF (and speed) from \u20131% \u00b1 4% to 11% \u00b1 1% (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> &lt; .05). At the lower FCS speeds, \u03b7F calculated using general adjustments was lower than \u03b7F calculated using individual adjustments (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic> &lt; .05), but differences disappear at the fastest speeds.
