Oct-1 is hyperphosphorylated as cells enter mitosis, and mitosis-specific phosphorylation is reversed as cells exit mitosis. A mitosis-specific phosphorylation site in the homeodomain of Oct-1 was phosphorylated in vitro by protein kinase A. Phosphorylation of this site correlated with inhibition of Oct-1 DNA binding activity in vivo and in vitro. The inhibition of Oct-1 DNA binding during mitosis suggests a mechanism by which the general inhibition of transcription during mitosis might occur.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1126\/science.1684878","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,10,5]],"date-time":"2006-10-05T22:10:16Z","timestamp":1160086216000},"page":"1814-1816","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":186,"title":["Mitotic Phosphorylation of the Oct-1 Homeodomain and Regulation of Oct-1 DNA Binding Activity"],"prefix":"10.1126","volume":"254","author":[{"given":"Neil","family":"Segil","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Rockefeller University, New York, NY 10021."}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Susan Boseman","family":"Roberts","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Rockefeller University, New York, NY 10021."}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Nanthaniel","family":"Heintz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Rockefeller University, New York, NY 10021."}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"221","reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","first-page":"193","volume":"15","year":"1983","unstructured":"BOYNTON, A.L., THE ROLE OF CYCLIC-AMP IN CELL-PROLIFERATION - A CRITICAL-ASSESSMENT OF THE EVIDENCE, ADVANCES IN CYCLIC NUCLEOTIDE RESEARCH 15: 193 (1983).","journal-title":"ADVANCES IN CYCLIC NUCLEOTIDE RESEARCH"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"257","DOI":"10.1038\/247257a0","volume":"247","year":"1974","unstructured":"BRADBURY, E.M., CONTROL OF CELL-DIVISION BY VERY LYSINE RICH HISTONE (F1) PHOSPHORYLATION, NATURE 247: 257 (1974).","journal-title":"NATURE"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"317","DOI":"10.1016\/0014-4827(64)90098-9","volume":"35","year":"1964","unstructured":"DAVIDSON, D, RNA SYNTHESIS IN ROOTS OF VICIA FABA, EXPERIMENTAL CELL RESEARCH 35: 317 (1964).","journal-title":"EXPERIMENTAL CELL RESEARCH"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0092-8674(87)90100-0"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1093\/nar\/9.23.6505"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1093\/nar\/9.13.3047"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_7_1","unstructured":"Harlow E.
