The application of intramolecular isotopic distributions to evaluate the origins of N\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O, however, requires a foundation in laboratory experiments in which individual production pathways can be isolated. Here we evaluate the site preferences of N\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O produced during hydroxylamine oxidation by ammonia oxidizers and by a methanotroph, ammonia oxidation by a nitrifier, nitrite reduction during nitrifier denitrification, and nitrate and nitrite reduction by denitrifiers. The site preferences produced during hydroxylamine oxidation were 33.5 \u00b1 1.2\u2030, 32.5 \u00b1 0.6\u2030, and 35.6 \u00b1 1.4\u2030 for\n                    <jats:italic>Nitrosomonas europaea<\/jats:italic>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:italic>Nitrosospira multiformis<\/jats:italic>\n                    , and\n                    <jats:italic>Methylosinus trichosporium<\/jats:italic>\n                    , respectively, indicating similar site preferences for methane and ammonia oxidizers. The site preference of N\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O from ammonia oxidation by\n                    <jats:italic>N. europaea<\/jats:italic>\n                    (31.4 \u00b1 4.2\u2030) was similar to that produced during hydroxylamine oxidation (33.5 \u00b1 1.2\u2030) and distinct from that produced during nitrifier denitrification by\n                    <jats:italic>N. multiformis<\/jats:italic>\n                    (0.1 \u00b1 1.7\u2030), indicating that isotopomers differentiate between nitrification and nitrifier denitrification. The site preferences of N\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O produced during nitrite reduction by the denitrifiers\n                    <jats:italic>Pseudomonas chlororaphis<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>Pseudomonas aureofaciens<\/jats:italic>\n                    (\u22120.6 \u00b1 1.9\u2030 and \u22120.5 \u00b1 1.9\u2030, respectively) were similar to those during nitrate reduction (\u22120.5 \u00b1 1.9\u2030 and \u22120.5 \u00b1 0.6\u2030, respectively), indicating no influence of either substrate on site preference.
