Other phi X174 gene sequences were removed by nuclease digestion. Expression of gene E was shown to be necessary and sufficient to produce lysis phenomena exhibited by infection with intact phage. Lysis, its inhibition by MgSO4 and spermine, its progression through a spheroplasting stage, and its dependence on an early chloramphenicol-sensitive step were reproduced in clones induced for expression of the E gene product. Escherichia coli clones carrying the E gene not under lac control, and clones under lac control but only minimally induced for gene E expression, exhibited morphological aberrations consistent with the view that the mechanism by which gene E mediates cell lysis is related to host cell division processes.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1128\/jvi.44.3.993-1002.1982","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,1,6]],"date-time":"2020-01-06T01:19:22Z","timestamp":1578273562000},"page":"993-1002","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1128\/asmj-crossmark-policy-page","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":74,"title":["Lytic action of cloned phi X174 gene E"],"prefix":"10.1128","volume":"44","author":[{"given":"K D","family":"Young","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"R","family":"Young","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"235","container-title":["Journal of Virology"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1128\/jvi.44.3.993-1002.1982","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1128\/jvi.44.3.993-1002.1982","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2022,3,4]],"date-time":"2022-03-04T22:46:20Z","timestamp":1646433980000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/10.1128\/jvi.44.3.993-1002.1982"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1982,12]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"3","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1982,12]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1128\/jvi.44.3.993-1002.1982"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1128\/jvi.44.3.993-1002.1982","relation":{},"ISSN":["0022-538X","1098-5514"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0022-538X","type":"print"},{"value":"1098-5514","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1982,12]]},"assertion":[{"value":"1982-12-01","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
