Commun."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2001]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>Nickel(II) ion reacts with 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-1,8-bis(methylphosphonic acid) (H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>) at room temperature with formation of <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>-[Ni(L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)]<jats:sup>2-<\/jats:sup> complex. The complex was crystallised in several forms in dependence on conditions of isolation (temperature, pH, solvent mixture). Crystal structures of <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>-O,O-[Ni(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)] (<jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>), <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>-O,O-[Ni(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)]\u00b72H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O (<jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>), <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>-O,O-[Ni(H<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)]Cl\u00b7H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O (<jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold>) and <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>-O,O-[Ni(H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)]Cl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u00b72H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O (<jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold>) were determined by X-ray diffraction. In all the compounds, Ni<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> is in octahedral <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>-O1,O2-<jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic>-N1,N8-<jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>-O1,N4-[Ni(L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)]<jats:sup>2-<\/jats:sup> (hereafter abbreviated as <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>-O,O-[Ni(L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)]<jats:sup>2-<\/jats:sup>) arrangement with <jats:bold>V<\/jats:bold> conformation of the cyclam ring. Complexes <jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold> exhibit very unusual coordination through the phosphoryl group of double-protonated phosphonate moiety. Tetraethylester of H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup> having only poorly coordinating phosphoryl oxygen atoms also forms nickel(II) complex <jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold> with <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic> arrangement. Corresponding <jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic>-O,O-[Ni(L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)]<jats:sup>2-<\/jats:sup> complex is formed only in strongly acidic medium through conversion of the <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic> complex; it was characterised by X-ray diffraction as dihydrochloride dihydrate, <jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic>-O,O-[Ni(H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>)]Cl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u00b72H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O (<jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold>). The analogous compound (NH<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(<jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic>-O,O-[Ni(L<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>)])\u00b7H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O (<jats:bold>7<\/jats:bold>) is obtained quantitatively by reaction of Ni<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> with 4,11-dibenzyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-1,8-bis(methylphosphonic acid) (H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>).
