Anaemia may occur, but it is only rarely attributed to haemolysis. The authors report about the case of a 41-year-old woman with the diagnosis of acute HBV infection and coagulopathy (without encephalopathy) who developed non-immune haemolytic anaemia. Total recovery of the analytical liver profile, coagulopathy and anaemia was achieved through treatment targeting HBV.This case shows that, although rare, non-immune haemolytic anaemia may occur in association with acute HBV infection and that HBV suppression seems to lead to progressive anaemia resolution.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1136\/bcr-2017-221763","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,10,24]],"date-time":"2017-10-24T08:45:59Z","timestamp":1508834759000},"page":"bcr-2017-221763","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/crossmarkpolicy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Acute hepatitis B virus infection and severe non-immune haemolytic anaemia: a rare relationship"],"prefix":"10.1136","volume":"2017","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3985-0718","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"In\u00eas","family":"Furtado","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Internal Medicine Department, Centro Hospitalar do Porto, Porto, Portugal"}]},{"given":"Diana","family":"Valadares","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Intensive Care, Centro Hospitalar do Porto, Porto, Portugal"}]},{"given":"Filipe Gaio","family":"Nery","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Intensive Care, Centro Hospitalar do Porto, Porto, Portugal"}]}],"member":"239","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,10,24]]},"reference":[{"key":"2025082707500150000_2017.oct24_1.bcr-2017-221763.1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"551","DOI":"10.3109\/00365549709035892","article-title":"Haemolysis complicating acute viral hepatitis in patients with normal or deficient glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity","volume":"29","author":"Chau","year":"1997","journal-title":"Scand J Infect Dis"},{"key":"2025082707500150000_2017.oct24_1.bcr-2017-221763.2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1243","DOI":"10.7326\/0003-4819-48-6-1243","article-title":"Acute acquired hemolytic anemia in association with acute viral hepatitis","volume":"48","author":"Raffensperger","year":"1958","journal-title":"Ann Intern Med"},{"key":"2025082707500150000_2017.oct24_1.bcr-2017-221763.3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1","DOI":"10.1155\/2013\/438375","article-title":"Acute cholestatic hepatitis a virus infection presenting with hemolytic anemia and renal failure: a case report","volume":"2013","author":"Lapp","year":"2013","journal-title":"Case Reports Hepatol"},{"key":"2025082707500150000_2017.oct24_1.bcr-2017-221763.4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.jhep.2009.04.009"},{"key":"2025082707500150000_2017.oct24_1.bcr-2017-221763.5","first-page":"228","article-title":"Severe Coombs negative hemolytic anemia in hepatitis B","volume":"125","author":"Vanderhoof","year":"1976","journal-title":"West J Med"},{"key":"2025082707500150000_2017.oct24_1.bcr-2017-221763.6","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1002","DOI":"10.12688\/f1000research.7086.1","article-title":"Case Report: Severe non-immune mediated haemolytic anaemia associated with acute hepatitis B and E co-infection in a patient with normal G6PD levels","volume":"4","author":"Wang","year":"2015","journal-title":"F1000Res"},{"issue":"Suppl 1","key":"2025082707500150000_2017.oct24_1.bcr-2017-221763.7","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"164","DOI":"10.1111\/liv.12081","article-title":"Management of acute hepatitis B and reactivation of hepatitis B","volume":"33","author":"Jindal","year":"2013","journal-title":"Liver Int"}],"container-title":["BMJ Case Reports"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/syndication.highwire.org\/content\/doi\/10.1136\/bcr-2017-221763","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,8,27]],"date-time":"2025-08-27T14:50:16Z","timestamp":1756306216000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/casereports.bmj.com\/lookup\/doi\/10.1136\/bcr-2017-221763"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2017,10,24]]},"references-count":7,"alternative-id":["10.1136\/bcr-2017-221763"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bcr-2017-221763","relation":{},"ISSN":["1757-790X"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1757-790X","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2017,10,24]]}}}
