This process seems similar to the long-recognized random diffusion of nucleosomes along DNA, but the remodeling process is unidirectional and ATP dependent. Several years ago, we developed a model for nucleosome migration, based on the diffusion of \"twist-defects\" within the nucleosomal DNA. This has been modified into a model that incorporates ATP-dependent defect generation, and can account for many observations concerning remodeling. However, certain experimental studies in recent years have cast doubt on the applicability of the twist-diffusion model for remodeling, and seem to favor instead a \"reptation\" model. We discuss herein these problems and propose a resolution.Key words: nucleosome, remodeling, chromatin. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1139\/o03-038","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2003,7,23]],"date-time":"2003-07-23T16:08:32Z","timestamp":1058976512000},"page":"169-172","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":29,"title":["Models for chromatin remodeling: a critical comparison"],"prefix":"10.1139","volume":"81","author":[{"given":"K van","family":"Holde","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"T","family":"Yager","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"155","reference":[{"key":"p_1\/p_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"7484","DOI":"10.1128\/MCB.22.21.7484-7490.2002","volume":"32","author":"Aoyagi S.","year":"2002","journal-title":"Mol.
