C"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2020,8]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>Xenon dual-phase time projection chambers designed to search for weakly interacting massive particles have so far shown a relative energy resolution which degrades with energy above <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$\\sim $$<\/jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:mo>\u223c<\/mml:mo><\/mml:math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula> 200 keV due to the saturation effects. This has limited their sensitivity in the search for rare events like the neutrinoless double-beta decay of <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$^{136} \\hbox {Xe}$$<\/jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mrow\/><mml:mn>136<\/mml:mn><\/mml:msup><mml:mtext>Xe<\/mml:mtext><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula> at its <jats:italic>Q<\/jats:italic> value, <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$Q_{\\beta \\beta }\\simeq 2.46\\,\\hbox {MeV}$$<\/jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>Q<\/mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>\u03b2<\/mml:mi><mml:mi>\u03b2<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><mml:mo>\u2243<\/mml:mo><mml:mn>2.46<\/mml:mn><mml:mspace\/><mml:mtext>MeV<\/mml:mtext><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula>. For the XENON1T dual-phase time projection chamber, we demonstrate that the relative energy resolution at <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$1\\,\\sigma \/\\mu $$<\/jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn><mml:mspace\/><mml:mi>\u03c3<\/mml:mi><mml:mo>\/<\/mml:mo><mml:mi>\u03bc<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula> is as low as (<jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$0.80 \\pm 0.02$$<\/jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>0.80<\/mml:mn><mml:mo>\u00b1<\/mml:mo><mml:mn>0.02<\/mml:mn><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula>)\u00a0% in its one-ton fiducial mass, and for single-site interactions at <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$Q_{\\beta \\beta }$$<\/jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\"><mml:msub><mml:mi>Q<\/mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>\u03b2<\/mml:mi><mml:mi>\u03b2<\/mml:mi><\/mml:mrow><\/mml:msub><\/mml:math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula>. We also present a new signal correction method to rectify the saturation effects of the signal readout system, resulting in more accurate position reconstruction and indirectly improving the energy resolution.
