In this model, selection of objects is a two-stage process: perceptual grouping is first performed in connectionist networks which dynamically bind together the neural activities triggered in response to related features in the image; secondly, by locking its output on the quasi-periodic bursts of activity associated with a single perceptual group, a system called the phase-tracker produces a temporal filter which retains the selected group for further processing while rejecting the unattended ones. The properties of our model are investigated in a number of simulations and interpreted in the context of current theories of visual attention developed in psychology. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0129065792000024","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2004,11,23]],"date-time":"2004-11-23T22:29:42Z","timestamp":1101248982000},"page":"1-17","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["SELECTIVE ATTENTION TO PERCEPTUAL GROUPS: THE PHASE TRACKING MECHANISM"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"03","author":[{"given":"ERIK D.","family":"LUMER","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Applied Physics, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305, USA"},{"name":"Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, 3333 Coyote Hill Road, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11,21]]},"container-title":["International Journal of Neural Systems"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1142\/S0129065792000024","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,8,6]],"date-time":"2019-08-06T21:54:02Z","timestamp":1565128442000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1142\/S0129065792000024"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1992,1]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"01","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11,21]]},"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1992,1]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1142\/S0129065792000024"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1142\/s0129065792000024","relation":{},"ISSN":["0129-0657","1793-6462"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0129-0657","type":"print"},{"value":"1793-6462","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1992,1]]}}}
