J. Oper. Res."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2026,4]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>In this paper, we introduce a compensation scheme for classical sequencing situations with linear costs. Rather than the general idea of allocating the total cost savings among the players, this paper focuses on the actual transfers of money for each neighbor switch. First, we introduce the compensation scheme by considering the loss of the players who need to move to a position later in the queue. Second, we characterize the compensation scheme by proposing the Compensation Balance property and the Net Payoff Equivalence Switch property. The former implies that for any neighbor switch customers, the loss of the forward-moving customer is the gain of the backward-moving customer. While the latter requires that for any two inverse customers, the net payoffs of them are equal. Third, a cooperative compensation game is introduced. For this game, it is shown that the Shapley value coincides with the related compensation scheme.
