This method focuses on the cyclic operation of the system which characterizes its bifurcation behavior. The concept of block switching sequence is introduced, which, in conjunction with the waveform periodicity of the system, can be used to distinguish the various types of bifurcation behavior, e.g. \"smooth\" period doubling and \"nonsmooth\" border collision. This concept explicitly exposes the mechanism of border collision from a circuit operational viewpoint and leads to a direct detection criterion for this global bifurcation. The proposed method is applied, as an illustrative example, to develop two-dimensional bifurcation diagrams for a voltage-mode controlled buck converter. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0218127405013253","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,8,28]],"date-time":"2005-08-28T20:50:29Z","timestamp":1125262229000},"page":"2263-2270","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["SYMBOLIC ANALYSIS OF BIFURCATION IN SWITCHING POWER CONVERTERS: A PRACTICAL ALTERNATIVE VIEWPOINT OF BORDER COLLISION"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"15","author":[{"given":"CHI K.","family":"TSE","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, China"}]},{"given":"DONG","family":"DAI","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, China"}]},{"given":"XIKUI","family":"MA","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Electrical Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, 710049, China"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"rf1","volume-title":"Nonlinear Phenomena in Power Electronics","author":"Banerjee S.","year":"2000"},{"key":"rf2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/63.56516"},{"key":"rf3","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/81.168922"},{"key":"rf4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/81.828567"},{"key":"rf5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/81.481457"},{"key":"rf6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/TCSI.2004.829240"},{"key":"rf7","volume-title":"Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos","author":"Thompson J.
