Gersten asked whether the reduced \u2113<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>-homology of a group of type \u2131<jats:sub>n<\/jats:sub> vanishes in all dimensions up to n - 1. We prove this for combable groups and for the fundamental groups of closed 3-manifolds.
