This paper describes and demonstrates the supervenience architecture, a multilevel architecture for integrating planning and reacting in complex, dynamic environments. We briefly review the underlying concept of supervenience, a form of abstraction with affinities both to abstraction in AI planning systems, and to knowledge-partitioning schemes in hierarchical control systems. We show how this concept can be distilled into a strong constraint on the design of dynamic-world planning systems. We then describe the supervenience architecture and an implementation of the architecture called APE (for Abstraction-Partitioned Evaluator). The application of APE to the HomeBot domain is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the architecture. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0218215792000118","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2004,11,24]],"date-time":"2004-11-24T19:50:24Z","timestamp":1101325824000},"page":"411-449","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["PLANNING AND REACTING ACROSS SUPERVENIENT LEVELS OF REPRESENTATION"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"01","author":[{"given":"LEE","family":"SPECTOR","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Communications and Cognitive Science, Hampshire College, Amherst, MA 01002, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"JAMES","family":"HENDLER","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2012,4,6]]},"container-title":["International Journal of Cooperative Information Systems"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1142\/S0218215792000118","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,8,7]],"date-time":"2019-08-07T01:06:16Z","timestamp":1565139976000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1142\/S0218215792000118"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1992,12]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"03n04","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2012,4,6]]},"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1992,12]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1142\/S0218215792000118"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1142\/s0218215792000118","relation":{},"ISSN":["0218-8430","1793-6365"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0218-8430","type":"print"},{"value":"1793-6365","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1992,12]]}}}
