Existing approaches involve many disparate concepts, frameworks and technologies. What is needed is a comprehensive and overarching framework that handles the processing and workflow requirements of Virtual Organizations, maps them to a collection of service-oriented tasks, dynamically configures these tasks from available services, and manages the choreography and execution of these services. The goal is to add semantics to Web services to endow them with capabilities needed for their successful deployment in enterprise-scale systems for Virtual Organizations. <\/jats:p>
This paper introduces such a framework, the Knowledge-based Dynamic Semantic Web Services (KDSWS) Framework that addresses in an integrated end-to-end manner, the life-cycle of activities involved in preparing, publishing, requesting, discovering, selecting, configuring, deploying, and delivering Semantic Web Services. In particular, the following issues are addressed with an emphasis on adaptability to rapidly changing environments and standards: (1) semantic specification of both service's and requestor's capabilities, constraints and preferences including quality of service, trust, and security; (2) transaction control and workflow management; and (3) resource management, interoperation and evolution of the Virtual Organization. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0218843004001024","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2004,11,26]],"date-time":"2004-11-26T20:43:01Z","timestamp":1101501781000},"page":"441-485","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["A FRAMEWORK FOR DYNAMIC SEMANTIC WEB SERVICES MANAGEMENT"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"13","author":[{"given":"RANDY","family":"HOWARD","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"E-Center for E-Business, Department of Information and Software Engineering, MSN4A4, George Mason University, 4400 University Drive, Fairfax, VA, 22030-4444, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"LARRY","family":"KERSCHBERG","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"E-Center for E-Business, Department of Information and Software Engineering, MSN4A4, George Mason University, 4400 University Drive, Fairfax, VA, 22030-4444, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2012,1,25]]},"reference":[{"key":"rf6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1038\/scientificamerican0501-34"},{"key":"rf10","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/5254.920598"},{"key":"rf16","volume-title":"Web Services Essentials","author":"Cerami E.","year":"2002"},{"key":"rf17","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/5254.920599"},{"key":"rf19","first-page":"52","author":"Ko I.-Y.","journal-title":"IEEE Internet Computing"},{"key":"rf24","series-title":"2004 AAAI Spring Symposium Series","volume-title":"A framework for design and composition of Semantic Web services","author":"Gomez-Perez A.","year":"2004"},{"key":"rf25","series-title":"2004 AAAI Spring Symposium Series","volume-title":"Foundations for OWL-S: Aligning OWL-S to DOLCE","author":"Mika P.","year":"2004"},{"key":"rf26","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/0-387-23344-X_4"},{"key":"rf31","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"16","DOI":"10.1007\/978-3-540-39403-7_4","volume":"2798","author":"Briukhov D.","journal-title":"Advances in Databases and Information Systems"},{"key":"rf35","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/MIC.2003.1200304"},{"key":"rf50","author":"Howard R.","journal-title":"Int.
