The proposed framework starts with dense point data scanned from the surface of a physical prototype and produces CAD models ready for downstream applications. Targeting on achieving maximum efficiency in the whole reverse engineering process, the proposed framework adopt a hierarchy of shape representations in a special order, i.e. implicit, piecewise linear and parametric surfaces. Based on the proposed hierarchical shape structure, a set of shape editing operators such as Boolean operators, blending, offset, morphing, free-form deformation and texture mapping, is efficiently integrated into the framework. A great diversity of free-form shape models with various modeling operations is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed multiresolution framework.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0219467805001999","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,11,22]],"date-time":"2005-11-22T08:48:37Z","timestamp":1132649317000},"page":"765-787","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["MULTIRESOLUTION SHAPE MODELING AND EDITING IN REVERSE ENGINEERING"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"05","author":[{"given":"YONG-JIN","family":"LIU","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"KAI","family":"TANG","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"AJAY","family":"JONEJA","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"MATTHEW MING-FAI","family":"YUEN","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"rf1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/882262.882311"},{"key":"rf3","volume-title":"Introduction to Implicit Surfaces","author":"Bloomenthal J.","year":"1997"},{"key":"rf4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/274363.274366"},{"key":"rf6","series-title":"Lecture Notes in Computer Science","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"119","DOI":"10.1007\/BFb0054315","author":"Edelsbrunner H.","year":"1998"},{"key":"rf7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/CBO9780511530067"},{"key":"rf8","volume-title":"Curves and Surfaces for CAGD: A Practical Guide","author":"Farin G.","year":"2002"},{"key":"rf9","first-page":"137","volume":"15","author":"Gregory A.","journal-title":"Visual Comput."},{"key":"rf16","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s003710050149"},{"key":"rf19","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/2945.773803"},{"key":"rf20","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/BF02945586"},{"key":"rf21","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s00371-002-0162-2"},{"key":"rf22","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"565","DOI":"10.1007\/s00371-003-0222-2","volume":"19","author":"Liu Y.
