Each spiral can be approximated by an Archimedean spiral with center, width, and phase change according to Brownian motion. A barrier exists between two spirals if the phase synchronization hypothesis is taken into account, and the occurrence rate of pair decay (simultaneous disappearance of two spirals) can be explained through a random walk simulation with the barrier. Simulation experiments show that adjacent species violation is necessary to create new spirals. A hypercycle system can live for a long time if spirals in the system are somewhat unstable, since new spirals cannot emerge when existing spirals are too stable. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0219525903001018","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2004,1,28]],"date-time":"2004-01-28T10:23:57Z","timestamp":1075285437000},"page":"515-535","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["THE BIRTH AND DEATH PROCESSES OF HYPERCYCLE SPIRALS"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"06","author":[{"given":"KAZUMASA","family":"OIDA","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"ATR Adaptive Communications Research Laboratories, 2-2-2 Hikaridai Seika-cho Soraku-gun, Kyoto 619-0288, Japan"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"rf2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0167-2789(91)90049-F"},{"key":"rf3","unstructured":"M.
